Camp Risk is staffed by two co-directors, an assistant director, and a trained team of qualified youth counselors who are active in church ministry. All staff members have been screened and are well trained for their positions.

Jim Hughes has been involved at Camp Risk since its creation in 1992, the nine years as its director. When Jim is not a camp, he is a teacher in the Clay County School system. He teaches computer technology to grade Pre-K - 6th. Jim earned his master's degree in education from UNF. He has been a teacher for 28 years.

Jim is also a liturgical songwriter and music minister at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Orange Park. He just completed his 32nd year there and is currently finishing his latest recording of songs for liturgical celebrations.

Shelly Hughes received her master's degree in counseling and is currently a licensed family counselor and director is outpatient services for Clay Behavioral Health Center. She has her office in Middleburg and is in her tenth year as Camp Risk's co-director.

Jim and Shelly have just finished directing the Broadway musical “Godspell” with a cast of 16 youth from St. Catherine’s. They have been married for 29 years and have three grown daughters. Jim and Shelly are expecting their first grandchild in October. They live in Orange Park and enjoy the time they share with the campers and each other at Camp Risk.
